Last year, I suggested a list of LGBTQ+ novels for kids, but this year I broadened my list to include nonfiction as well because it’s essential that we learn more about our community’s often underrepresented history. Remember that if you are buying these LGBTQ+ middle grade books, it would be great to support your local indie bookshop. Fiction Love Frankie by Jacqueline Wilson and Nick Sharratt Freeing Finch by Ginny Rorby Finch just wants to find a place where she feels like she is understood....

But my personal favorite mangas are vampire romances. Partly because I love vampire romances in general, but also because romance manga tends to put a twist on what American readers would consider a traditional vampire romance, making it 100x more fascinating and fun than a typical novel. I mean, manga characters tend to look otherworldly anyway, so why not go with that? If you want to jump headfirst into vampire romance manga style, I recommend these series (and note that just because these are mangas doesn’t mean they’re okay for little kids–in fact, most of them aren’t)....

Which, granted, we may not know much about space beyond what we can see, but when you compare that to what we know about the ocean floor it’s not too shabby. We just want to be included, so what if we don’t have warp core technology yet....

Did you know that getting blackout drunk on the regular is not normal? I didn’t. I’d always been drinking toward blackout, assuming that was the same goal everyone had on a night out. I thought the point of drinking was to lose hours of your life to darkness....

I Am Legend (dir. Francis Lawrence) adapted from i am legend by Richard Matheson I watched the Will Smith movie and, knowing this story was in my wheelhouse, decided I wanted to read the book immediately. I ordered the book that night, started it as soon as I received it…and then shortly thereafter stopped reading it. I think most of my disappointment is simply expectation. I really enjoyed the storyline of the film adaptation and was just looking for more of that from the book....

That said, with the exception of a handful of books written by teenage authors, most YA literature is written by adults. So, if we really want to get an authentic perspective on what teens are experiencing right now, shouldn’t we be reading stories written by them?
